SUMMARY:
SEIU Local 1 has been on the cutting edge of building the power of low wage workers in service industries and fighting for economic, racial, immigrant, LGBTQ+ and environmental justice.
The Director is responsible for all aspects of this 9,000 and growing Division’s internal and organizing strategy designed to achieve SEIU Local 1 goals including, but not limited to the design and implementation of a strategic plan and the direction of the Security Division.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement a strategic plan for the security division’s internal and external priorities and strategies.
- Supervise and develop Local staff and provide training on Internal Organizing, Leadership Development, Grievance Handling, Bargaining and Contract Administration.
- Oversee and plan campaigns to develop the union market and increase union density above 80% in all our industries.
- Strategic planning with Coordinators and others to execute large-scale campaigns involving member-leaders and stewards.
- Manage relationships with employers and other unions in the state.
- Understand policy as it relates to strengthening and building the Division.
- Oversee and supervise daily operations within the division, including strategic implementation and oversight of the strategic plan for the division including building a strong field operation aimed at member leadership development and building the activist base to increase our power in the workplace in the community.
- Hire, train, supervise and develop all staff.
- Plan and manage leadership development among membership to build a strong contract campaign in support of bargaining.
- Demonstrate ability to work in a digital environment on various platforms.
- Ability to work with other Directors and Departments i.e. Communications, Research, Data, Finance
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the local.
Direction and Decision Making
This position reports to a senior member of the leadership team and must have the ability to work independently.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Labor Relations, Economics, Political Science, or equivalent work experience.
- Six years’ experience directing large organizing campaigns, leading, or supervising staff and holding them accountable.
- Committed to SEIU Local 1’s mission of social, racial and economic justice.
- Experience with collective bargaining, representation, and grievance handling.
- Ability to cultivate productive relationships with politicians, allies, and employers.
- Capacity to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse groups.
- Capability to multitask and balance competing demands.
- Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Ability to develop and run meetings, while articulating the vision of the local
- Strong ability to motivate people and delegate responsibility
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, digital platforms, and database software.
- Experience w Database software to run efficient campaigns.
- Experience organizing with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
