Description
SEIU Local 1 has been on the forefront of building the power of low-wage workers in service industries and fighting for economic, racial, immigrant, LGBTQ+, and environmental justice. We are now hiring an Office Assistant for our Detroit office to facilitate day-to-day operations of the Union office as well as building management and other duties in multiple areas.
 
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
• Provide administrative support including but not limited to answering phones, written correspondence and assisting in the preparation of reports, emails, and proposals.
• Facilitate operation, maintenance and repair on environmental systems using Union contractors.
• Manage key distribution and alarm codes.
• Ensure that office equipment is operating properly.
• Assist/instruct all staff with use of computer program operation, copiers, printers, Wi-Fi, mailing equipment etc. and facilitate repairs.
• Order janitorial, equipment and office supplies.
• Receive, review, and submit bills for payment.
• Receive, sort, and distribute mail.
• Enter data in Unionware, Google Documents, etc.
• Process, review, and collect Dues Authorization cards.
• Prepare phone lists, walk lists and member site lists for Organizers.
• Manage calendars, coordinate in person and virtual meetings.
• Follow office procedures accurately and consistently.
• Manage communication, written and orally, with members and staff.
• Maintain current, accurate and easily accessible files.
• Provide back-up for other administrative assistants when necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.
 
JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 
• Ability to professionally interact with members, vendors, and other visitors.
• Knowledge of computer software (Word, Access, Excel, Google Drive, Zoom).
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to organize and set priorities.
• Solid organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
• Ability to make suggestions for improvement in policies and procedures.
• Effective communication skills include the ability to compose business correspondence.
• The ability to make and follow through on a work plan.
• The ability to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Previous experience in union or community organizing is desirable.
• A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required.
• Two years of experience and/or some college.
• Ability to occasionally work weekends or late hours.

SALARY and BENEFITS:

• Salary is competitive and negotiable based on the Staff Union Contract ranging from $60,00-$70,000.
• Full benefits packages include employer paid health insurance, employer paid pension plan, phone allowance, paid vacation, and other benefits.
